What is the NAATI CCL Test?

The NAATI CCL (Credentialed Community Language) test is an official assessment administered by NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) that measures your ability to interpret spoken dialogues between English and a community language.

Passing the CCL test awards you a NAATI CCL credential and, more importantly, 5 bonus points towards your Australian Skilled Migration visa points test. These 5 points can make the critical difference between receiving a visa invitation or missing out.

The test consists of 2 dialogues × 14 segments = 28 interpretation tasks. You need at least 63/90 overall (and ≥ 29/45 per dialogue) to pass and earn your credential.

The NAATI CCL test awards 5 bonus points towards your Australian General Skilled Migration visa application (subclasses 189, 190, 491). These points are added to your points test score and can be the deciding factor in whether you receive a visa invitation through SkillSelect.

To pass the NAATI CCL test you need: Overall score ≥ 63/90 AND each individual dialogue score ≥ 29/45. Both conditions must be satisfied simultaneously — a high total score won't help if either dialogue falls below 29.

The NAATI CCL test is approximately 30 minutes of active interpretation time. It consists of 2 dialogues × 14 segments each (28 segments total). There is also a preparation time before the test begins. Practising with our timed mock tests prepares you for the actual exam pressure.

NAATI currently offers CCL tests in 40+ languages, including Hindi, Mandarin (Chinese), Vietnamese, Arabic, Tamil, Punjabi, Nepali, Sinhalese, Urdu, Korean, Japanese, Tagalog, Indonesian, Bengali, Malayalam, Telugu, Gujarati, Farsi (Persian), and many more. Our platform supports all NAATI-accredited CCL languages with authentic practice dialogues.

Each segment is scored out of 3 points: 3 (all meaning conveyed accurately), 2 (meaning mostly conveyed with minor omissions), 1 (significant meaning lost), or 0 (no meaningful content). With 14 segments per dialogue, each dialogue is worth a maximum of 45 marks. Total possible score is 90.

Most candidates benefit from 4–12 weeks of focused preparation. Beginners typically need 8–12 weeks, while those with prior interpreting experience may need only 4–6 weeks. We recommend practising all 6 domains (health, legal, education, finance, community services, employment) and completing at least 5–10 full mock tests before the real exam.

The NAATI CCL test currently costs approximately AUD 800. This fee is paid directly to NAATI. Check the official NAATI website for the current fee.
